Where We Monitor

The Midwest Bat Hub collaborates with various state, federal, tribal, and NGO partners across the Midwest Region to bolster bat monitoring efforts. In addition to data collected through these partnerships, the Hub also runs a community-science based Volunteer Monitoring Program, with a strong network of volunteers collecting stationary acoustic data in the region.

Volunteer Collected Data

Since its launch in 2021, the Volunteer Monitoring Program has steadily grown over the past four years. Through this effort, stationary acoustic data—including observations during the shoulder seasons that provide insight into bat migratory movements—have been collected.

The map below displays the geographic extent of data collected by program volunteers, shown at the GRTS cell level (a 10×10 km sampling unit). Please note that multiple monitoring sites may exist within a single GRTS cell. Additionally, this map does not include data from the 2025 Volunteer Monitoring season.

Partner Collected Data

The Hub provides various services such as equipment loans, data processing services, and data management tools to help partners collect and manage data. The map below illustrates the extent of data collected by organizations collaborating with the Midwest Bat Hub. The following map shows current data through September 30th, 2024. Please note that this map does not represent all bat monitoring data collected within the region, as some entities operate independently of the Hub.
